Song Kol to the Kok-Shaal-Too, on horseback and on foot
Thirteen days across the summer pastures of central Kyrgyzstan, moving between herding families at three thousand metres and finishing under the glaciated wall of the Kok-Shaal-Too on the Chinese border. Horses carry the loads; you walk or ride as the day suits you.
Bishkek
Arrive and rest. A briefing over dinner, and a kit check — this is a trip where a forgotten item cannot be replaced after day two.
Kochkor
Over the Too-Ashuu pass and down into the Kochkor valley, where we meet the horsemen and spend the night in a family guesthouse with the best bread of the trip.
Song Kol
A long climb onto the plateau by the Kalmak-Ashuu track, arriving at a lake the size of a small sea with nothing on its shore but grass, horses and white felt.

Song Kol
Out with the herders on their own horses, at their own pace, for as long as anyone wants. Beginners are matched with quiet animals and shadowed all day.
Song Kol
A walking traverse of the southern shore to a second camp, past burial mounds nobody has excavated and marmots that will not stop shouting at you.
Naryn
Off the plateau by a different pass and into the Naryn river valley. Hot water, a bed, and a resupply. The last town of any size before the border country.
Tash Rabat
South-east toward the Torugart, then up a side valley to the stone caravanserai. Yurts beside it, and a short afternoon walk to loosen yesterday's driving.
Tash Rabat pass
Up to the pass above the caravanserai at 3,900 metres, with Chatyr Kol and the Chinese border laid out below. Down the same way; a demanding day at altitude.
Kok-Shaal-Too
West along the frontier road, then off it entirely, following a river up toward the range. Camp on grass, with a glaciated wall closing the head of the valley.
Kok-Shaal-Too
A day walk to the moraine at the foot of the glacier and back. Ibex on the far slope most mornings. Nothing else moves up here at all.
At-Bashy
Out of the mountains and back to the valley floor, with a stop at the Koshoy Korgon fort. A long, satisfying descent and a proper meal at the end of it.
Bokonbaevo
Over the Dolon pass and down to the southern shore of the lake, with an afternoon at Bokonbaevo watching eagle hunters work their birds. Final dinner by the water.
Manas International (FRU)
Four hours back to the capital for evening and overnight flights. Day rooms are held for everyone; nobody sits in a departure hall for eight hours on our account.
